British Athlete of the Week ( 24/12/18 – 31/12/18)January 2, 2019
The final race weekend of 2018 ended with plenty of high quality performances. As a result, it required a pair of outstanding runs to take the top spots this week.
The winner of the women’s category is Beth Potter for running 32:07 to take the win at the Ribble Valley 10K. Not only does this make her the 2nd fastest Brit in 2018 (14 seconds off the top spot), but it’s also the joint 12th-fastest 10K ever by a British woman!
Potter has enjoyed a successful transition to Triathlon over the last couple of years and it’s evident that her running ability is profiting as a result. 2018 was a successful year for Beth, who competed across both sports at the commonwealth games and earned her first ITU World Cup podium!
The men’s winner, Dewi Griffiths, finishes 2018 on a high after spending a significant spell out with injury early in the year. His 2:09 marathon PB was arguably the best performance by anyone in 2017, so he had high expectations for this year which had to be put on hold. Although still not quite back at his best, he’s now running top times again. Griffiths clocked a new Seasons Best of 28:49 at the Corrida de Houilles 10K (🇫🇷) and finishes the year 4th on the British Rankings.
Here are some other top British results to close out 2018, just missing out on the award. No doubt you’ll see many of these names picking up Athlete of the Week titles in 2019.
Note: we’ve also included races which took place on Monday 31st in order to start afresh with 2019 results next week.
