British Athlete of the Week: Eilish McColgan

British Athlete of the Week: Eilish McColgan

January 15, 2019 0 By jegmar

Last Friday, Eilish McColgan became only the fourth British woman in history to run a sub-32:00 10K on three separate occasions. Competing at the ooredoo 10K in Doha, a road race she has won in 2017, 2018 and now 2019, McColgan clocked a new personal best of 31:51, a mere two seconds faster than the time she ran in January last year. With a winning time of 31:56 in the year prior to that, it’s now a hattrick of victories, personal bests and sub-32 clockings in the Qatari capital!

With that, the 28 year old Scot has moved within 90 seconds of Paula Radcliffe’s British record of 30:21 set in Puerta Rico in 2003. Eilish’s mother, Liz McColgan still sits second on the British all-time list with a time of 30:39 in 1989. Eilish’s new PB keeps her in 10th place, but there’s a densely packed list of runners between her and Gemma Steel’s third-placed 31:26 set in 2014.

After announcing a new ASICS sponsorship deal in the days leading up to the race, McColgan has made a flying start to 2019. In 2017 and 2018, her January 10K performances were enough to top the British rankings at the end of the year. Will she do the same in 2019? Or can the likes of Beth Potter or Charlotte Arter take the top spot with a breakthrough performance?
